Beer City Cup
Only five years old and already one of Asheville's signature soccer tournaments. The Beer City Cup kicked off this weekend with 76 teams from eight different states competing.
The tournament's popularity has grown every year and so has the competition. The John B. Lewis soccer complex was jam-packed with games over the weekend.
What started as a replacement for the Blue Ridge Cup has become a tourist attraction. Teams get stronger and more competitive every year, and organizers say that's no accident.
David Turner, co-director Beer City Cup, "really the tournament has kinda of grown but teams have sort of consolidated a bit because they come here and they realize the competition is really pretty stiff. So they go back and they will like group together or work with other friends within their soccer leagues or communities and bring an even stronger community."
Turner said he describes the event as a soccer tournament and a beer festival all wrapped into one weekend.
