The Highway Patrol says Robert Slater, 26, was the driver of a car that was hit head-on by a pickup on Highway 280 in Mills River.

His name is not being released because charges are pending against him.
Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused the driver to cross the center line.
One person died in a head-on collision Tuesday evening in Mills River.
Troopers say a pickup truck crossed the center lane on Highway 280 into oncoming traffic, hitting a dark green Honda car. The driver of the car, Robert Slater, was killed. Troopers say Slater was wearing his seat belt, but he died at the scene.
Slater was local and was headed toward Brevard. The driver of the black pickup truck was going the opposite direction on Highway 280. Emergency crews took the truck driver to Mission Hospital.
Eyewitnesses tell Highway Patrol investigators the cars involved were going about 50 mph. Eyewitnesses say all of a sudden, the driver of the pickup truck crossed the center line and collided head-on with the Honda.
The truck flipped several times. Why the driver of the pickup truck crossed over remains under investigation, says Sgt. Greg Dills with Highway Patrol. "We really don't know, Sgt. Dills says. "They were behind him, coming from Brevard area and say he continued about 50 mph and just suddenly veered off to the left."
The lead investigator at the scene says the truck driver's cell phone was found outside the truck. It's been taken in as evidence and will be analyzed.
Two other cars were involved, but had minor damage.
