UPDATE: Boy Bitten By Dogs
Four dogs are being held in quarantine at the Buncombe County Animal Shelter, following an attack on a young boy. Officials say the 8 year-old is autistic and wandered-off from his mother.
The attack happened around 7:30 last night on Wedgefield Drive. Authorities say the boy wandered away from the Roadway Inn and Suites, where he's staying with his mom. He somehow got into a fenced-in yard where the 4 coon hounds were being kept by their owner. It appears he approached the dogs and that's when they started biting.
A neighbor, Darlene Barnwell, heard the commotion and rushed to help. Barnwell says, "his pants had been ripped-off him, bloody pretty much everywhere. When i saw him he was just rolling around like a toy, and all 4 of the dogs were just mauling him."
The child was taken to Mission Hospital. We have still not received word on his condition, but officials say his injuries didn't look to be life-threatening.
As for the owner, Animal Control says the dogs were in a proper enclosure and that they're current on their rabies shots, but will be quarantined to play it safe. Quarantine in dog-bite cases is standard operating procedure.
