Memorial Day Honors

On this Memorial Day, people here in the mountains are pausing to remember those who gave their lives for our country. One ceremony took place Monday morning at the Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain.

The ceremony started at 10 a.m. with about 250 in attendance. Many people wore red, white and blue. Several people said they also came out for love of country and an appreciation for our soldiers.

The ceremony is annual, but this year is first time a veteran of Vietnam has spoken at the podium. The master of ceremonies says he could never find one, he said they don't ever want to talk. The retired marine that spoke this year, hammered off statistics about that war. There were 40 sets of brothers killed, three sets of fathers and sons. He also mentioned that the most common age of a soldier killed in Vietnam was 20-years-old. As of last year, the average age of a soldier killed in Afghanistan was 26-years-old.

Memorial Day is one of the busiest days of the year for Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain. One little girl made thank you cards and walked around putting them on graves.
