Residents Stranded As Lake James Crests
Mountain residents were able to return to homes in low-lying campsites to survey damage sustained by heavy weekend rains for the first time Wednesday.
Residents at Moose Lodge campsite in Nebo - which sits along a now-swollen Lake James in McDowell County - estimated that roughly a dozen of about 30 campers set up on the campsites one island were flooded last weekend.
Some of the campers took on as much as a foot of water, in all, Moose Lodge sites sustaining thousands of dollars in damages.
Lake James crested in Nebo Monday morning, leaving Kathy Good and her 13-year-old daughter stranded on their island campsite.
"We were watching refrigerators float by, we were watching docks float by, and believe it or not - we watched a bouncy house float by," said Good. "We were sitting there in awe of Mother Nature."
At its highest point - Lake water had a swingset, picnic pavillion and the campsite's entire beach underwater.
McDowell County residents say floodwaters also damaged dozens of campers and trailers in the Lake James community - which sits across the water from Moose Lodge.
