Heavy Rains Damage Roads

The latest round of heavy rains wiped out a section of a heavily traveled road near Fletcher in Henderson County.

The DOT is widening and straightening curves along Mills Gap Road near Fletcher Elementary School.

Heavy rains over the past week plus the additional rain yesterday overwhelmed the drainage system beneath the road.

Inspectors noticed the water was causing trouble, and took action.

Aaron Powell, DOT Maintenance Engineer, "there's an old pipe that had rusted out, and it actually started washing out under the road and created a sink hole, and it finally got to the point that it settled, then the road started to cave in, and that's when we had to close it."

Powell says the sink hole that crews will repair this afternoon is actually part of the old road that the town will abandon when they finish the project.
