Summer Meals Program Expands
The free Summer Meals Program is well underway for Buncombe County Schools, thanks to funds from the USDA.
Children ages 2-18 are receiving free lunches, and in some cases breakfasts, at 15 sites across the county now through August 9.
Three new sites were added last week: Grant Southside Community Center in Asheville, Hill Top Mobile Home Park in Candler, and St. John’s Baptist Church in Arden.
This is the second year for the free summer meal service.
Last year, over 52,000 meals were served to hungry children in Buncombe County.
This year, over 70,000 meals are expected to be served.
The meals follow USDA nutritional guidelines, and are funded through the USDA’s Summer Food Service Program.
“We anticipated good participation this year, because the program was in place last year and many people in the community knew to look for us at last year’s meal site locations,” said Mary Andreae, Buncombe County Schools Child Nutrition Supervisor. “We are very excited about the growing success of this year’s program, as well as incredibly humbled by the collective efforts of our staff and community members.”
The free meals are available to children and teens ages 2-18 who come to a free summer meal site, located at schools, churches, community centers and other places which are safe for children and teens to go. Many sites offer educational and recreational activities so the youth can eat, spend time with friends and take part in activities offered. Per the USDA guidelines, the youth must eat their meal at the site—no meals can be taken off site.
There is no application, no registration, no proof of residency, and no identification is needed. Any child age 2-18 may eat a meal at any of the sites in the county.
Meals will be served at all locations; however some sites are only available to children participating in programs at those locations. Below is a current list of open locations, where any child can receive a meal. If additional sites are added, the list will be updated on the Buncombe County School website at www.buncombe.k12.nc.us. Note that most sites offer lunch, but some offer breakfast only, or both breakfast and lunch, and that times vary. Pool sites close during severe thunderstorms.
