Merger On Hold
A bill that would approve the merger of Waynesville with Lake Junaluska is on hold in the state capital.
When surveyed last Spring, residents of the Methodist retreat in Haywood County supported the annexation by a two-thirds majority.
Waynesville town aldermen support it as well. A bill to make that happen cleared the State Senate, but is now on hold in a House Finance Committee.
Some lawmakers want a vote of Lake Junaluska residents before giving their approval.
Waynesville leaders look forward to the added revenue from the merger totaling about one million dollars.
Alderman Julia Freeman says, “If it doesn't go through in this session, we definitely have the option of it being heard in the short session which starts I think in the Fall.
