Update: Teen Killed in Wreck on Birthday
A Pisgah High School student dies on the Fourth of July, in a tragic car accident. Joseph Treadway was the passenger in a vehicle that flipped over in the Max Patch area of Madison county.
NC Highway Patrol says Treadway was celebrating his 16th birthday with his friend Colton Whitted. They spent the day fishing with Whitted's parents. On the way back, NC Highway Patrol says Whitted was driving along a gravel road when the accident happened. The vehicle overturned down an embankment, neither teen was wearing a seat belt. Troopers say Treadway was ejected from the vehicle, before it rolled on top of him. Troopers say speed or alcohol wasn't a factor in the crash, but heavy rain may have played a role.
The Treadway family is no stranger to tragedy. Joseph Treadway's older brother, Tyler, nearly lost his life three years ago. A Facebook page is dedicated to Tylers's recovery, called "Team Treadway." Since the accident, it's also being used to remember Joseph.
In a letter, Treadway's mother tells News 13 that Joseph Treadway enjoyed hunting and fishing and that he planned to go to college to become a diesel mechanic. She went on to say he loved life.
Troopers say the driver of the vehicle was treated and for minor injuries, and that charges are pending. Memorials may be made in Joseph's memory to "Team Treadway" at the Champion Credit Union in Canton. Family will receive friends Tuesday, prior to Joseph's funeral service from 1-3pm at Bethal Baptist Church.
