Henderson Authorities Rescue Dog Near Dam
"Made for an exciting day. Basically what we do," says Corporal Gary Cox, talking about the dramatic rescue of a lab mix named Lucy.
The dog was precariously perched on a ledge near the Lake Summitt Dam.
"You see where the flumes are?" Cox points. "Just on the other side of that."
The call came in Wednesday afternoon after a family spotted the dog. It escaped from her home's electric fence a couple of miles away. Cox thinks Lucy might have chased an animal and wound up in a tight spot.
"We didn't want to scare her too much," says Cox. "There's not a lot of room on that ledge."
Cox, deputy Rick Stone, and Sgt. Mike Marsteller went to work, using a cable to get to the dog.
"We went down the cable, went down the first ledge," he recalls. "She was on the second ledge."
"She was acting kind of skittish when he saw us. When I talked to the owner they said she was a rescue dog. Officer grabbed his collar, had to coax him back up here."
Before they could celebrate, Lucy took off running. Thankfully headed straight back home, where she's safe and sound.
"But I'm glad the dog returned home," Cox says. "One less injured animal. "
