Haywood County residents plan on fighting a mountain quarry's request to expand.
The Waynesville Quarry operated by Harrison Construction is asking the state for a permit change that would increase its boundaries by about eight acres. The company says the extra land may be used for mining someday, but there will always be a buffer between operations and nearby residents.
Some neighbors are skeptical and plan to attend a public hearing Thursday night to express concerns about possible impacts on their health, homes, and more.
Margie Bradley says, “And the City of Waynesville needs to be concerned because they're taking down a mountain and making an ugly view that will affect their tourism and everything else.”
Harrison Construction President Todd Quigg says, “We feel like some of their concerns are overblown and that Harrison has done a good job to remedy any issue with the surrounding community.”
The public hearing is at 7 p.m. at the Haywood County Courthouse. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources will review and evaluate the comments before ruling on the quarry's request.
