South Asheville Kmart Set To Close
The Hendersonville Road Kmart is set to close this fall.
Pulliam Properties developer Rusty Pulliam didn't renew the store's lease, and Sears Holdings said Monday the store will close in mid-October. The store will begin its liquidation sale on July 28.
The Kmart on Tunnel Road closed in January.
"The store closures are part of a series of actions we’re taking to reduce on-going expenses, adjust our asset base, and accelerate the transformation of our business model," said Sears Holdings Director of Corporate Communications spokesperson Howard Riefs in a press release.
Pulliam says the shopping center will be torn down in the fall and a brand new complex up-and-running on the 13-acre property in fall 2014.
Pulliam owns 28 properties in the Hendersonville Road corridor and says it's the fastest growing part of the city.
"The Kmart's the last piece of a great puzzle of all the growth that's transpired on that street in the last twenty years," said Pulliam.
Pulliam said the anchor store of the new shopping center will be made public August 1.
There has been speculation a Publix Supermarket would fill the spot. Monday a Publix spokesperson said the company has not signed a lease in South Asheville.
Pulliam said the new tenant has signed a lease.
