Threat Against Officer

A Jackson County man is in jail charged with going online and threatening to shoot and kill a police officer. 39-year-old Derrick Lenart faces three counts of communicating threats.

According to his arrest warrant, Lenart went on Craigslist Thursday night and said, By Friday August 23rd, one police officer will be shot and killed." He went on to say. Please keep tuned to WLOS for details."

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office and the State Bureau of Investigation took the threat seriously, especially considering Lenart's criminal history as a registered sex offender, with a long rap sheet including larcenies and assault. They arrested him Friday at his apartment in Cullowhee.

Nearby Western Carolina University students are relieved.

It makes me feel a little better that police took the right precautions to come out and find the guy and stop what he was doing, said Greysen Brendle.

Lenart remains in jail on $250,000 bond. He's scheduled for court September 17th.
