Vigil For Shooting Victim
A twilight vigil Thursday night for the victim of an accidental shooting sends a plea for neighbors to get rid of their guns.
Asheville Police say 18-year-old Derrick Bomar, Jr. died of an accidental gunshot wound Saturday.
About 200 neighbors joined the family to honor Derricks memory at Walton Street Park. They lit candles and walked together to the apartment on Livingston Street where the shooting happened. They sang songs and released balloons. They talked about a proud father who was turning his life around, going back to school, getting a job, providing for his family. He leaves behind two little boys.
His mother and his aunt say the community would be much safer if people didnt carry guns or play with them.
Services for Derrick Bomar Jr. will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Tried Stone Missionary Baptist Church.
