I-40 Rock Slide
The mountainside gave way around 7:45 Monday night. It did not cause any injuries. But the debris did come down on one car and the driver hit another car as he tried to avoid it.
The NCDOT shut down the right lane of westbound traffic at mile marker 7 overnight.
The NCDOT originally said it would probably be noon before they had the rockslide cleared. But they removed the last barricades and had traffic moving once again earlier that scheduled.
I-40 in Haywood County has a long history of rock slides. The most recent big one shut down the entire interstate for seven months starting in October of 2009. It was in this same area and had a big impact on tourism in the mountains. The clean-up cost $18 million.
