Parents Pitching In
Budget cuts in Raleigh are being met head-on at one mountain school, by parents who decided to pay their own way. The Ira B. Jones Elementary PTO voted to spend surplus funds on a teacher assistant position, that had been slashed as part of the statewide reduction in classroom helpers.
A one-year, part-time position, split between seven 4th and 5th grade classrooms, cost $4,300. Parents say the money is really not the point, but that it's about making a difference and sending a message.
What's decided in Raleigh for next school year remains to be seen. But parents are hoping other PTO's take their lead and that state legislators take notice. By Frank Kracher
