Downtown Opens To Distilleries
Distilleries and breweries are now welcome in downtown Tryon.
Tryon Town Council passed a change to the existing zoning ordinance that will allow for alcoholic beverages to be brewed along Trade Street.
The ordinance was prompted when a local resident approached the council, interested in setting up Tryon Back Door Distillery, and the council said the subject of a distillery was not addressed within the existing ordinance.
Tryon Town Manager Joey Davis said the hope is that the ordinance will draw visitors, create jobs and also be a nod to Polk County heritage.
"There's definitely a tie to the heritage here," said Davis Monday. "This is a chance to take something that has been around for years and bring it to an aspect where it's legal."
Stills are legal in the county provided the owner secures the appropriate permits and paperwork from the federal government, said Sheriff Donald Hill.
Hill says he believes there are still quite a few home brewers within county limits, but says most of those are likely brewing for personal use rather than profit.
