Exploding Bear Population

North Carolina's black bear population is exploding.  Sgt. Andrew Helton of the NC Wildlife Resources Commission says four bears were shot and killed by homeowners in Buncombe County this week. Helton says all the bears were digging in garbage cans.

Helton says wildlife biologists receive 10 to 15 calls per day about nuisance bears in the area.  Helton says bears are very hungry this time of year and will seek out whatever food source they can find.  Helton says the best way to keep bears away is to empty out bird feeders and put garbage up and out of bears reach.
