The handling of a recent concert has a mountain town facing criticism. Last month, Maggie Valley ended up promoting country singer Matt Stillwell at the town's festival grounds.
Restaurant owner Charlie Meadows had started the process, but needed the town to apply for an alcohol permit for him. When it was turned down, Festival Director Audrey Hager made the request in the town's name.
"When we were turned down and realized what we had to do, we had very little time to make a decision and by that time this concert had already been advertised," said Town Manager Tim Barth.
The town covered alcohol costs and the booking fee.
Critics say the Town of Maggie Valley shouldnt act like a bank and front money to for-profit organizers.
Efforts to reach Audrey Hager Thursday were unsuccessful. A personnel meeting with the Board of Aldermen is scheduled for Tuesday at 6 p.m.
