A city council candidate wants to know why the police department is operating without a full force.
Mike Lanning says the Asheville Police Department is not operating with a full force. He wants to know why. Lanning obtained documents showing the force was down by nearly 40 officers and dispatchers last month.
The chief provided current figures showing the department has cut the vacancies by half. But Lanning says high turnover and vacancies can lead to problems with officer morale. Thats because they work more overtime.
City officials say they have a strategy planning process underway to address these issues and set goals for the next three years.
