The main runway at Macon County's airport will expand soon. But it comes with some debate as well.
Supporters say an up-to-date runway will be safer, attract more planes, and stimulate business and tourism. But some neighbors say more planes will bring more noise.
The commissioners recently approved $290,000 in local taxpayer money to match a $2.5 million federal grant for the project. It was a close vote.
Commissioner Ron Haven voted no. He says the airport doesn't bring much value to the average resident.
"Everybody in Macon County that owns property pays taxes. But very, very few get an opportunity to use it," said Haven.
Construction on the airport expansion is set to begin next month.
