Racist Facebook Post Investigation
Two mountain school systems are investigating racist comments posted publicly on Facebook by a football player after their game Thursday night.
Swain County High School played a JV game at Cherokee High. After the game a Swain player posted a series of racist comments directed to Cherokee player Tye Mintz disparaging Native Americans.
It came as a shock to teammates like Damon Taylor.
"My friend, he took a picture of the messages and showed me everything. There's a lot of explicit stuff on there," said Taylor.
The superintendents of both schools met in Cherokee Friday afternoon to discuss what to do. Cherokees Superintendent Dr. Scott Penland says from what he sees, it could amount to a hate crime. His Swain counterpart says the action taken by the Swain player does not reflect the beliefs of the school system and the incident remains under investigation.
Tye Mintz's father is a football coach at Cherokee. He and his family had no comment to News 13.
Efforts to reach the Swain player Friday were unsuccessful.
There's no word yet whether any charges will be filed.
