McDowell Daycare Vouchers
Parents scrambling, and childcare staff devastated, after the federal government says it will suspend funding for daycare vouchers starting this week. But in McDowell County, it's good news tonight after a commissioners meeting.
McDowell County commissioners voted unanimously to cover daycare voucher funding with county funds tonight. That will amount to about $130,000 a month to pay for the 432 kids in daycare, that couldn't afford to be there without help.
This comes after letters were sent to parents and local daycares last week saying vouchers to pay for the childcare would stop this Thursday. That news was described by multiple people we spoke with today, as just devastating. But now, after this meeting, there's a sigh of relief.
Part of this money that the county will apply to cover these daycare costs, will come from Smart Start grants. The rest, from what's essentially an emergency fund. So local parents are covered through the end of October.
