Mountain rescue crews from North and South Carolina find the body of a man who fell into a river at a waterfall.
It happened Sunday night at Big Falls on the Thompson River, near the state line. The waterfall is in such a remote area, it took a friend of the accident victim hours to hike out and call for help.
Rescue workers packed up their A.T.V.s Monday morning at the trailhead area, on Highway 281, south of Gorges State Park. They say a man and his female friend walked south on the trail down to 4 waterfalls on the Thompson River. The victims friend says he slipped and fell into the river at Big Falls, the last waterfall before the river flows into Lake Jocassee.
She called hours after the accident, because it took her that long to find someone with a cellphone on the foothills trail. Crews from Lake Toxaway Fire and Rescue began the search around 10 last night, and had to halt the search at 2 a.m. because of rain and dangerous conditions.
Crews in North Carolina and in Oconee County, South Carolina, began the search at 9 a.m. this morning. Rescue workers found his body in a hazardous section of the river around 4 p.m. They will resume the body recovery operation tomorrow morning.
From the parking lot at the Bad Creek Foothills trail access area, it will take crews about 4 hours to carry equipment with A.T.V.s and walk up to the falls. So far, officials have not released the names of the victim or the woman who was with him. They did say the couple was from Asheville. Well let you know when more information becomes available.
