Chief Anderson Comments On Officer's Death
Senior officer Robert Bingaman died Tuesday when his cruiser crashed off the Jeff Bowen Memorial Bridge. He was 37-years-old.
Asheville's police chief was visibly shaken as he confirmed Officer Bingaman had died. Chief Anderson called Robert Bingaman a hard working officer. He got choked up several times during the news conference and asked the public to remember the officer and his family.
"We ask the community keep Officer Bingaman in their prayers as well as his family friends and officers he worked alongside to keep this community safe," said Chief Anderson.
The chief also said he had no information on what may have led to the accident or how fast the officer was going in the westbound lane.
Chief Anderson said Bingaman served Asheville well as a traffic officer, working for the Asheville Police Department the last six years.
North Carolina's Highway Patrol is now investigating the case.
The head of Asheville's Fraternal Order of Police says this is the first death of an on-duty Asheville officer in 41 years.
