Police Officer Involved in Fatal Crash
Cherokee Police say one of their officers struck and killed a pedestrian last night. It happened along the 441 Bypass on the Reservation.
The Police Chief says Cherokee resident Randy Driver was hit and killed by the officer around 8:40 p.m. Workers at an Exxon station nearby, say Driver and his son had come in to buy a few things.
The father and son walked down the 441 Bypass in the dark, police say, wearing dark clothes. Randy Driver's cousin, Alexias Reed, says the 2 often walked on the roads.
Chief Ben Reed says Driver and his son Randall were apparently crossing the busy highway. He says Officer Cody McKinney was on patrol and had just spotted a car coming towards him with a headlight out. As he slowed down, made his turn, and began to accelerate to attempt to stop the vehicle, 2 pedestrians were struck by the patrol unit.
Chief Reed says Randy Driver was killed at the scene. His son Randall injured his wrist and was treated and released from the Cherokee hospital.
Officer McKinney is on paid administrative leave while the State Highway Patrol investigates, but the Chief says nothing stands out as gross negligence. He also says he's talked to the Driver family, reassuring them the police department will get to the bottom of what happened.
