Local Veteran Remembers Beirut Barracks Attack
It was the deadliest attack on Americans until 9/11 happened.
The bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon that killed 241 American servicemen happened 30 years ago Wednesday.
Chris Brothers of Mill Spring was one mile away from the barracks when a suicide bomber drove a truck laden with explosives through the gates.
He felt the tremor and saw the mushroom cloud and says he was one of the first Marines to arrive on scene that day.
Brothers says he ate nothing but crackers for three days, as he and fellow Marines searched the crater, where the barracks had once stood, for bodies.
He said it began as a search and rescue mission and as hours passed, turned to a recovery mission.
