Asheville police aren't responding to questions about how a man in police custody was able to escape during an interview at the station. It happened Thursday afternoon when 35-year old Jesse Bridgers was brought in for questioning in several breaking and entering cases in West Asheville. Bridgers was wanted in one of the crimes and had other outstanding warrants.
People we spoke with were surprised that someone could walk out of police custody unnoticed. Michael Dorch says, "it appears their custody practices need to be re-examined." Rosie Johnson was just as surprised. She says, " someone should have been watching him if he was brought in."
Police charged Bridger with misdemeanor escape Friday morning. He was located without incident on depot street near downtown around 11a.m. Friday.
