New Belgium Plans 2015 Launch
New Belgium Brewery is set to open construction in West Asheville soon.
Passersby on Craven St. might not see much on their side of the fence, but on the other side, some see a world of possibilities.
The general manager can't wait to see that facility get off the ground. Lately, his company has faced rumors that the brewer is backing out of Asheville.
"Way back in the spring we announced we were going to delay construction for 8 months," says GM Jay Richardson. "So with no activity on the site, I think it's quite natural to question whether it was really gonna happen. It was never a question for us."
Richardson says beer production at their site in Fort Collins, Colorado had a lot to do with the launch date of Asheville's facility.
"We're able to make beer in Asheville right when we've reached capacity in Fort Collins." Richardson explains.
Their goal now is to start making beer in the mountains by December of 2015.
"This brewery will be able to produce 500-thousand barrels of beer a year," says Richardson.
The company says it will continue site work next month in preparation for groundbreaking next spring.
"We've largely focused on dirt work, preparing the site for construction," Richardson tells us.
In next two years, New Belgium hopes those doubts will disappear.
"We can't wait to get started," Richardson says. "We can't wait for the fruition of all the energy."
The company will eventually have 140 employees here in Asheville. Job listings should be posted on their web site around mid-2015.
