Marriage License Denied For Same-Sex Couple
A same-sex couple in Henderson County is denied a marriage license Wednesday in the latest attempt to challenge North Carolina law.
Mary Burson and Carole Kaiser have been partners for four decades. They went before Register of Deeds Nedra Moles flanked by family and friends. The couple was turned away based on Amendment One, which makes same-sex marriage illegal in North Carolina. But they say today's effort is still a big step forward.
"Never did we imagine in 40 years, that we would ever be at this place. Where it would even be an issue and we could stand up there and ask. We've come a long way and we're going to keep going. It's not over yet," said Burson.
This was the latest in a series of organized actions across North Carolina urging local officials to follow federal instead of state law.
