Disrespecting the dead, that's what some say is happening at one mountain cemetery. James Warren and Darlene Oliver's parents are buried at the Pisgahview Memorial Cemetery in Candler.
They showed News 13 numerous headstones sunken 2 to 3 inches into the ground, some headstones covered by grass to make them unreadable, overturned flower vases, and one headstone just sitting in a wagon. Flags in the veteran's area were faded and tattered.
James Warren says the unkempt graves are a disgrace. He says he and his sister have complained to cemetery management repeatedly over the past 3 years, with no results. That may be because management is changing.
Cheryl Duckett is an accountant helping the cemetery's board of directors. She says when the owner died a few years ago, no one was prepared to take over managing the site.
The board of directors is working with the state cemetery commission to change that. She and board member Kyle Travis say they take James and Darlene's complaints seriously. Duckett adds the flags in the veterans area are less than a year old, but wet weather took it's toll on them this year.
