North Carolina continues to see a growing problem when it comes to prescription drug abuse. Henderson County is one of the areas impacted by this epidemic and community leaders are working to put an end to deadly trend.
The State Medical Examiner's Office says from 1999 to 2011, North Carolina has seen a 300% increase in unintentional poisoning deaths. A vast majority of those deaths are drug or medication-related. In their attempt to try and curb this growing trend, Partnership For Health of Henderson County launched Hope Rx Tuesday. The project is a community wide initiative that was designed to reduce the increasing rate of prescription drug abuse in the county and prevent the tragic deaths caused by this serious health problem. Health care providers, educators, law enforcement, the judicial system and parents are teaming up to try an figure out a solution.
Hope Rx is also asking for the public's input. A community conversation on the issue will be held on November 7th. It will go from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m. in the Gala Room at Blue Ridge Community College. Folks who attend will be able to share their concerns and ideas on how to combat this epidemic.
