Salvation Army Store Robbed
In one part of West Asheville, the Salvation Army's Red Kettle campaign began in front of K-Mart on Patton Avenue.
Meanwhile, at the Salvation Army Thrift Shop on New Leicester Highway, the APD investigated an overnight robbery.
Colonel Ernest Miller says the thief stole cash and smashed equipment. Because the store was shut down Friday morning, he says the total loss was close to $4,000.
"We're trying to help the community," Miller says. "And someone's trying to take a selfish piece of that away. "
One customer who pulled up Friday morning says the robbery angers him.
"This kind of ruins my day," says Norris Jeffrey. "This is sorry, these people do a good job of earning money."
At the Red Kettle campaign launch on Patton, others were also outraged. The effort raises money to make sure two thousand kids have Christmas toys.
"It may come back on them," Christine Wright says about whoever robbed the Salvation Army. "A matter of time, they may need it one day."
Despite the loss, the Salvation Army expects plenty of people to answer the bell by donating cash at Red Kettles all over the mountains.
