Sandy Hook Anniversary

One year after the Sandy Hook tragedy, some mountain schools have much tougher safety measures in place.  Buncombe County now has seven additional school resource officers to cover the elementary schools.  Lt. Mike Ruby says the officers were already in the middle and high schools, but Sandy Hook made Buncombe County school leaders and local law enforcement realize officers are needed in the lower grades, too.  Ruby says all of Buncombe County schools now have the buzzer system for their main entrances.

Meanwhile, Bill Parker, Assistant Superintendent of Henderson County schools, says Sandy Hook lead to the electronic entry access at all elementary and middle schools.  However, Parker says more safety measures are needed.  He points out the need to enclose open walkways in some Henderson County schools, and moving the front office closer to the main entrance in others.  Parker says the school district is getting pricing for the re-modeling jobs and hopes to have them done within the next few years.
