Gift Bags for Veterans
Volunteers are packing hundreds of gift bags for local veterans.
Twenty people are putting thousands of items into about 750 gift bags for hospitalized veterans.
They are doing it at the Charles George VA Medical Center here in Asheville.
The fourth floor of the medical center is turned into a colorful assembly line.
They want to make sure that veterans in hospitals and managed care facilities all over Western North Carolina will have the assurance they are remembered during this holiday season.
Alyce Knaflich, AMVets Post 333, "it's very important because many of the veterans are here without family or away from that family, so Christmas is a special time of year and it lights their spirits up on the Christmas holidays."
The volunteers doing the work are from area veterans service organizations, charities like the Salvation Army, or fraternal groups like the Masons.
The gift bags are filled with donated items such as toiletries, hats, notepads, pens and small flashlights.
The rest of the bags will be handed out to veterans at the VA in Asheville on December 16th.
