Power Bill Scam

Con men hit a local business with a threat to turn off the power. Duke Energy says it's not the first time the scammers have targeted its customers.

The owners of Kelsey's Restaurant say they got a call Thursday from someone claiming to be from Duke Energy. The caller said the restaurant was behind on their bills and threatened to shut off power within hours if the $5,000 bill wasn't paid immediately. Owner Nick Sellas did what he was told. Using prepaid debit cards, he called the caller back and gave them information to access the money.

Duke Power officials say this scam has been going on in several states. They say anyone who gets a call like this should hang up. The company sends out several delinquent notices before shutting off anyone's power.
