State health officials send out an alert after patients in a Henderson County nursing home contracted the serious norovirus, an intestinal stomach illness.
Cardinal Care, a home in Hendersonville, does not have any cases, but executive director Chris Drake says health officials tell him there are patients with the norovirus at one area facility.
He says the facility dealing with the virus has patients who have around the clock full service nurse care.
Hand washing is critical to reduce the risk of the virus transfer. Norovirus can cause severe vomiting and dehydration and is extremely contagious.
In recent years there have been news reports of cruise ship passengers getting sick with the virus. The virus can be transferred from countertops or by sharing food or drink with someone who has contracted it.
