Rising Murder Rate
Two murders in one day have added to a growing number of homicides that have Buncombe County on track to record one of the deadliest years in recent history. Eleven people have died in homicide in the county in 2013 so far. Records show only 4 homicides in 2012 and 3 in 2011.
Sheriff Van Duncan said it was an "unusual" number of homicides and that none of them are related. He did say almost all of them involved either a family member or extended family members or people who knew one another.
Duncan urged residents to seek help if they feel threatened in a domestic situation. The United Way offers a resource hotline at 211 that can connect people to resources for mental health or domestic violence.
