Mountain Flooding Problems

Heavy weekend rains flooded many low-lying areas here in the mountains. Rivers, like the Tuckasegee in Swain County... rose quickly and in some spots overflowed its banks.

Residents of the Bear Hunter Campground just outside Bryson City say they had to move fast to get their campers away from the rising water.

With us being actually on the river side, it got up behind the back of the camper.  But luckily it didn't get in it before we got moved, says resident Mike Knapp

Some people decided not to leave... saying the flooding last January was worse.

Permanent campground resident Christine Towns says, I mean last year, we had it pretty much up to our waist and they moved us out.

Those who moved to higher ground say they'll move back closer to the river as soon as they get the all clear.
