Domestic Violence Deaths

2013 will go down as the deadliest year on record in Buncombe County, with 12 homicides. News 13 has learned that seven of those deaths are a result of domestic violence, that's more than half of the yearly homicides.  The timing of these deaths is also of note, since seven of the 12 occurred in just the past five weeks.  Associate Director Ann Flynn of Helpmate, a domestic violence agency, says the stress of the holiday season plays a factor in domestic violence.

"Holiday's don't cause domestic violence," says Flynn.  "But they cause stress, and stress many times a factor in domestic violence. Increased levels of stress."

These statistics are worrisome to domestic violence victim Jamie Lewdandowski.  She says the domestic violence related deaths could have been avoided if the people involved asked for help.

"It's alarming to me," says Lewdandowski.  "That people don't understand that a normal argument between two individuals can turn either murderous, suicidal or extremely violent in a matter of seconds."

If you are in an abusive relationship, or know of someone who needs help, call Helpmate. The 24 hour hotline number is 828-254-0516.
