Fire Destroys Home Near Cashiers
Fire destroys a three-story mountain home in Jackson County and threatens several other houses. It happened early Sunday morning just outside Cashiers in the Trillium subdivision.
Firefighters say flames were covering the almost 4,000 square foot home when they arrived. There were eight people from Raleigh inside who were renting the home. They were alerted by smoke detectors and got out safely.
It took firefighters from three departments to douse the flames. They hauled about 80,000 gallons of water up narrow roads into a heavily wooded area with many homes. Firefighters battled to keep the flames from spreading to nearby homes. The porch of a house next door caught fire but crews quickly put it out.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
