Teacher's Ukulele Fundraiser Takes Off
A math teacher at Erwin Middle School is determined to expose students to a tropical instrument. Dylan Hewitt launched a fundraiser on Kickstarter to launch a ukulele orchestra.
"A lot of students are looking at their phones," Hewitt says. "Playing an instrument you're being creative, you're being original."
His goal was to raise $1,500. His effort has already brought in $2,000. That's enough for 10 ukuleles.
"it makes me feel really cool. I feel awesome that I know how to play the ukulele," says student Brook Potts, who's only been playing for 6 days.
The kickstarter campaign is about to get national exposure on the "Latifah" syndicated talk show. Host Queen Latifah interviewed Hewitt via Skype about his project.
Hewitt hopes students find musical inspiration in the ukulele.
"It just sounds really fun, it's really bright and it really gets people smiling," says Hewitt. "I think doing stuff like this outside of school creates community. It gives them opportunities and really allows me to get to know them and work with them in a way that's not just 'here's your next assignment.'"
