Sinkhole Opens In Shopping Center
A major sinkhole has opened up in a Rutherford County shopping center.
The hole is in a distant, largely unused corner of the Rutherford Square shopping area along Rutherfordton's Charlotte Road.
But the hole has grown to at least 25 feet wide - and the developer says likely that deep - since it initially opened up in November. The developer says a storm drain likely sunk into the ground and over time has taken a swath of the parking lot with it.
The parking lot is private and now the developer, Collett & Associates out of Charlotte, are scrambling to repair it. Friday morning a group of contractors, engineers and county staff met at the site to discuss how to proceed with repairs.
Town Manager Karen Andrews said bidding on the contract to repair the lot will likely begin on Monday and estimates that the sinkhole could be repaired within the next two weeks.
To make the repairs, the shopping center sign will have to come down and a shoulder and possibly a lane of Charlotte Road may be temporarily closed. The developer says, once the repairs start, they'll likely take several days.
