Boy Left In Cold

Haywood County school leaders are apologizing for sending a 7-year-old home on a bus, when he was supposed to be picked up.

The boy's mother says he was left outside more than half an hour in the cold and snow at their home on Wachayu Drive near Clyde Elementary School. It happened Saturday when school was held to make up for a snow day.

The mother says she had sent a note to her son's teacher that he was to be picked up, but it was forgotten by the end of the day.

She says not only was her son was exposed to dangerous weather conditions, he was in danger of being taken by his father. She says she has a protective order against him and choses to remain anonymous to protect her child.

Since she says this is the third time something like this has happened, she wants school leaders to fix the problem.

"And we're very very sorry that you know we didn't get this right this time.  And we've apologized to that parent several times and very sincerely and we want to make this right and try to make sure this doesn't happen again," said Associate Superintendent Dr. Bill Nolte.

Nolte says from now on, communication lists will be looked at more carefully each morning and double checked at the end of the day with the office.
