Fire Destroys Upper Hominy Mobile Home
Fire roars through a mobile home in Buncombe County and destroys everything in it's path. The blaze broke out just before 5 p.m. Wednesday on White Rock Branch Road in Upper Hominy. Fire officials say one person was in the home at the time of the fire. They were able to get out before being hurt.
The owner of the mobile home says knowing her tenant got out safely is the good news, but not having any insurance is what scares her.
Kathy Ann Overman watched the mobile home she was renting out burn to the ground. It took everything the recently retired school bus driver had not to cry.
Fire officials say the flames were so intense they were forced to go into defense mode. Crews from other departments were called in to help, but as day turned to night, fire fighters were eventually able to start extinguishing the blaze.
For Overman, it was a tough sight to take. After 45 years with Buncombe County Schools, she was hoping to finally take it easy.
"I guess I'll have to go back to work," said Overman.
The mobile home she just fixed up to rent out is unfortunately no longer available.
"I don't have enough money. I draw widow's pay. I don't have enough money in my widow's pay to pay bills so I needed that trailer to finish paying my bills," said Overman.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
