Residents Evacuated After Pipe Bursts
Water lines break in the attic of a four-story condominium in Asheville. Four of the 20 units that were damaged had to be evacuated so repairs could be made. It happened at the Beaucatcher House Condominiums above Tunnel Road.
A fitting on the fire sprinkler system cracked in the attic, flooding this condo with a high-pressure stream of water. Property manager says the cold weather is to blame for frozen pipes that likely thawed Wednesday.
20 residents had damaged condos and belongings. One of the evacuees told News 13 his guitars, furniture, and clothes survived, but the water ruined his condo. Managers are helping him to find another place to live.
The Red Cross is helping some of the evacuees.
Some residents were told repairs could take weeks or months to complete. City inspectors plan to inspect the damaged sprinkler systems to find out if a lack of insulation or maintenance was to blame for the cold weather pipe cracks.
