Boy Falls 100 ft. Down Well
An 11-year-old boy fell more than 100 feet into a well and survived. The incident happened at an abandoned home at 4001 N. Highway 101 in Greer.
Just after 5 p.m. Tuesday, two young boys were playing behind the abandoned house when they saw a flat piece of wood in the fenced-in back porch.
"Looked like a square piece of plywood sitting there, and it kind of nailed down but wasn't safe, I didn't know what was under it, he jumped on it, fell through, crashed down to the water," said Larry Lindsey.
Lindsey says his 11-year-old friend, Emory Howard, fell an incredible distance down the well.
Deputies say when they arrived on the scene, they thought the well was about 75 feet deep. But after attempting a rescue with a firefighter hanging upside down, they realized it was more than 100 feet.
As family gathered outside the house, rescue crews were communicating with the boy about his injuries.
After only about 2 hours on scene, crews were able to lift the boy out of the well and transport him via a waiting helicopter to a nearby medical facility.
The Greenville County Sheriff's Office says the boy has a possible broken arm and will be treated for hypothermia, but he should be just fine.
