Parkway Repairs Underway
Crews are working double shifts to rebuild a stretch of the Blue Ridge Parkway north of Asheville.
Last July, rangers closed 20 miles of the scenic highway because of a crack in the road at milepost 374. It reopened using a temporary bypass for the fall tourist season. Now the same section is closed for the $3.3 million repair.
Heavy equipment is now excavating the failed slope that allowed the road to crack. They're replacing the dirt and mud with rock and gravel for a more permanent fix.
Parkway officials say they hope to reopen at least one lane of the parkway by May 22nd.
