Propane Prices Soaring
The continued cold snap has contributed to a spike in propane gas prices. In the Asheville area, RB's Gas says the price for a gallon of propane has risen from $2.77 this summer to $4.30 per gallon this week. That's causing sticker shock for people who heat with propane as temperatures hover below freezing.
Propane use has been on the rise as the deep cold snap spreads across the country. Suppliers say prices have been hard hit by a wet summer in the mid west where propane is used to dry crops. The draw down in supply for drying crops combined with continued cold and demand overseas has created the perfect storm for propane prices.
Agencies offering heating assistance have seen people struggling to keep up with propane gas bills. But it's not the only fuel that's put a strain on family budgets. Asheville Buncombe community Christian Ministry is spending far ahead of its yearly budget on heating assistance and is asking the public for more donations to keep up with demand.
