WCU Celebrates 125 Years
Western Carolina University kicks off a year-long celebration of its 125th anniversary.
Chancellor David O. Belcher reminded those gathered of the university's beginning in 1889, when it was known as the Cullowhee Academy, then it became Western Carolina Teachers College and now its current name and part of the UNC system.
The chancellor says the anniversary is a chance to look back and to the future with help from a regional conference.
It's an effort for us not at Western Carolina University to pull people in to tell them what they ought to do, but to be a convener of leaders throughout Western North Carolina to help us plan together how we'll grow as a university, he says.
Belcher says the first regional conference will be in October.
The official 125th birthday bash will be in August.
